¨In the Garden of Memory, in the Palace of Dreams… that is where you and I shall meet.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Imaginar is a virtual community art park and event space, available 24/7 and accessible for anyone with a wifi-ready mobile or computer. Featuring large-scale original 3D artworks by Maria Bjorkdahl, Carol Colin, Aleka Corwin, Pascaline Doucin-Dahlke, Heather Hoggan, David Isakson, Mandy Palasik, Yeltsen Penado, and Robyn Sanford, this project is supported by the Arroyo Arts Collective, the DCA of Los Angeles, and inspired by La Tierra de la Culebra art park in Highland Park, California.
I initially proposed the project to be an on-site sculptural installation in November 2019. The AAC approved it in February 2020, and it was slated to begin in April of the same year. The pandemic shook the world in March 2020, and instead of cancelling the project, the collective bravely accepted my proposal to change it into a virtual project in respect of social distancing as the new norm due to Covid-19.
Imaginar is the Arroyo Arts Collective’s first ever virtual reality project. It has received more than 700 visitors during its first two weeks of opening, and introduced more than 30 artists, art administrators, and performers who self-identify as computer-illiterates to how 3D/VR technology can enhance public art and community engagement. The project also includes a Tinkercad for Absolute Beginner training series on Youtube, and special training events to help artists and anyone interested in learning desirable commercial skills in today’s workforce.
